If you love listening to music, you may have heard the song ‘one step at a time ‘Sung by American pop and R&B artist Jordan Spark. It is a very inspirational song with a message of patience in life.

What does one step at a time mean?

One step at a time means that everything undergoes a series of progressive and interdependent steps by which an end is attained. For example, you cannot learn to drive a car after a single lesson, or you cannot lose weight after one gym session. It requires several gym sessions for you to lose weight. Development is a continuous process that creates changes or positive impacts on the economic, environmental, social, and demographic components.

Self-development is a process of learning new skills that help us achieve our goals, and success and improve our way of living. Self-development is classified into four areas;

  1. Physical growth

2. Mental growth

3. Spiritual growth

4 . Emotional growth.

How does one at a time relate to life?

We all admire success in life and have set our goals and have our dreams. But we have to understand and accept that for us to achieve what we desire we must not be in a haste. We have to work hard daily making small achievements till we achieve the wholesome thing. We require patience, and determination to achieve our goals. No matter how motivated we feel we must be patient with the process.

If a hungry man, who has not eaten for days, gets some food to eat, he still needs to eat the food slowly so that he is not chocked and die, and still will only eat just a small amount because if he eats more then what his stomach can accommodate he will just end up vomiting the excess food.

This scenario explains how you cannot hurry the process of self-development. For you to achieve what you what you must be patient with the process. If you lack patience you may end up giving up on your dreams, getting stressed, or even getting a mental related illness.

How do you take one step at a time in life?

If you are that person who after setting his goals in life, develops anxiety, is overwhelmed with the whole process. You need to relax and try the following tips:

1. Break down your goals into smaller sub-goals.

Breaking down the goals is a way of accepting that attaining goals is a process and your mind is prepared for this process. It also ensures that you will remain motivated as you achieve the smaller sub-goals.

2. Start small.

Mostly when we set goals and dreams we are tempted to start calculating the many resources and money we require, as a result, we are discouraged because we may have all those resources and amounts of money to start and many dreams end up dying in this early stage. Don’t let your dream die, start small with what you have.

3. Expect challenges.

Be psychological prepare that the process of achieving your goal is not a smooth experience you are bound to experience some challenges. Positively take the challenges so that your motivation is not broken.

4. Create your own time.

Sometimes we’re too busy trying to do so many things, which are very important to us. We strain till we may end up being distressed. At that time we need to shut up our minds, regroup and gain perspective. You can practice through, meditation, prayers, exercise, or listening to music.

5. Talk to yourself every step.

Talking to yourself is one of the best ways you can do, to acquire intrinsic motivation. It works as a way of counting and appreciating small achievements. Talk to yourself every step of the process of achieving your goals. You will be able to handle failure and small achievements without anxiety that can prevent you from achieving your main goal and dream.

In conclusion.

See the bigger picture. The beautiful tree in the compound was once a tiny seed, the old woman in your neighborhood was once a bouncing newly born baby girl and the beautiful mansion in the city was once hips of blocks, sand, and cement. Everything in life is a continuous process so is our achievement and success.
